Access Stairs FAQ

Do external roof stairs need to be secured?

Yes. In open or unsecured areas, stairs must include fences or barriers to prevent unauthorised rooftop access.

How often should stairs be inspected?

At least every 12 months by a qualified inspector. Regular checks maintain safety and legal compliance.

What’s the advantage of modular stairs?

They’re faster to install, adaptable to site changes, and compliant by design.

What’s the max height per stair flight?

Stair flights can reach up to 4050mm. Beyond that, a landing platform must be introduced before the next flight.

Are handrails required on both sides?

Yes — if the stairs are wider than 1m. All stairways require at least one continuous handrail.

What incline is ideal for stair safety?

While AS1657 allows between 20°–45°, the ideal angle is between 30° and 38° for comfort and safety.

Why are stairs the safest access method?

They allow upright walking and the use of both hands, significantly reducing fall risk — especially where frequent access is required.
